OUR MUSIC
OUR STORY
The short one
Mild Goose Chase undoubtedly takes a unique approach to the typical folk duo. Nashville based Scott Peters and Winston-Salem, NC based Sam Amos pair cello and guitar together into a perfect bedrock for their rich vocal harmonies, lyrical songwriting, and exuberant improvisation. Whether flying through a raucous old-time rendition or floating through silky ballads, the pair’s musicianship shines across multiple instruments and genres. A dash of frailing banjo and other fretted surprises add variety and dimension to their unique sound. On stage, their mild demeanor assures that they never take themselves too seriously, even if their music might hint otherwise from time to time. Their debut album, A Tentative Debut released June 23, 2023.
The long one
If there was ever bluegrass cello, this is close. And while there might be plenty of bluegrass guitar to be found in the world, this is also, well, close. However, it’s not just the elements but how they’re combined that makes the sound of Mild Goose Chase. And with it, Scott Peters and Sam Amos have found fresh ground under the seemingly ever-growing umbrella of Americana music.
Scott and Sam first met in graduate school where they played in a variety of bands, backing up other artists before eventually inching their way to the front of the stage. Their very first gig as a duo was a cobbled-together, last-minute set of folksy covers performed live on air to over 100,000 listeners of a Spanish national radio station. In these covers they found a perfect outlet for their musical expression as they honed in on their duet sound and joint improvisational approach.
Though they parted ways, a year or so later they both serendipitously migrated to the piedmont triad of North Carolina. Ready to get back to gigging but unable in the midst of the global pandemic, they took their sound back to the lab and further developed the americana-lean-bluegrass sound that has been with them ever since – a sound and style that gained depth as they began composing and arranging original music. They found a balance between their voices and another between the acoustic guitar and the cello. Sam brings a soulful and honest guitar tone, flowing effortlessly between an up-tempo fiddle tune and a slow folk ballad. Scott truly brings a new sound to the cello, flipping the instrument back and forth between rhythmic grooves in the style of a guitar and improvisation in the style of a fiddle. But their instrumental back-and-forth is merely a bedrock upon which their vocal harmonies stand, constant and cohesive throughout their music.
Guided and shaped under the tutelage of the record’s producer (the band’s former program director) Casey Driessen, they took their time with the first album. Driessen’s attention to detail shines and takes the duo to a new level. A Tentative Debut picks you up with raucous anecdotal tunes and brings you close with nostalgic ballads. While some close friends received the album with groans of “finally!”, it was featured on the Spotify editorial team’s New Grass playlist throughout Summer 2023.
In support of A Tentative Debut, the duo embarked on the Get the Bird Out Tour across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia in Summer 2023. This past fall they presented their material in Raleigh at the 2023 IBMA Bluegrass Ramble showcase for up and coming bluegrass artists.
Look out for MGC rambling across the southeast mildly in chase of wherever their sound takes them.
